This session is an opportunity for dialogue between secondary and post-secondary educators on the value of the anthropological perspective and ethnographic methods to social science inquiry and learning. We see understanding of Cultural Anthropology as essential to living in a globalizing world and wish to map areas for greater connection between undergraduate Anthropology classes, contemporary anthropological research and the new BC Social Studies curriculum.
We also wish to discuss the learning opportunity presented to BC teachers and students by the joint meetings of the Canadian Anthropology Association (CASCA) and the American Anthropological Association (AAA). Between Nov 20-24th, 2019 near 10 000 anthropologists will be in Vancouver sharing their research and expertise. Secondary school teachers have an opportunity to bring anthropologists into their classrooms through the Anthropologists Go Back to School (AGBS) program created to better connect the Annual Meetings with their host city. We aim to promote anthropology as a tool of inquiry that enhances teaching and learning; to expose students as well as teachers to the types of research questions we ask, as well as methods to answer those questions; to encourage the study of anthropology and increase the presence of underrepresented minorities in the field.

Jaime Yard is a Cultural Anthropologist with special interests in the cultural politics of extraction in British Columbia. She is a faculty member in the Department of Anthropology at Douglas College where she teaches a broad range of courses in Anthropology and Gender, Sexualities and Women’s Studies including Ecology and Culture, Anthropology in Developing Countries and Contemporary Issues in Gender, Sexualities and Women’s Studies.
Julia Murphy is Cultural Anthropologist with special interests in Latin America, development discourses and ethnography, environmentalism, women, gender and feminist research. She is a faculty member in the Department of Anthropology at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Over the last decade she has taught courses on Latin America, Anthropology of Gender, Globalization, Indigenous Studies, Ethnographic Writing, Anthropological Research Methods, Anthropological Theory, and Introduction to Cultural Anthropology.
