Learning together while apart: New virtual field trips from the Canadian Museum of Immigration

As Heritage Interpreters at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, we tell the stories presented in the Museum and encourage our visitors to engage with this content in new, meaningful ways.  When Covid-19 hit, suddenly our exhibits were empty and dark – no visitors, no interpretation, but not for long. Undaunted by this unprecedented challenge, the Interpretation and Visitor Experience team created the framework for our new virtual field trips.

These curriculum-based virtual field trips are presented live to a class using an online platform. From elementary schools in Vernon, BC to synagogue congregations in Laval, Qc, we are reaching audiences we never thought possible. Our virtual field trips give all Canadians an opportunity to connect and learn together about the history of immigration in Canada – a history that provides a context for how we live today.
